It was a big day for the International League on Thursday, with four IL clubs drawing the biggest crowds in the minor leagues. Toledo, Columbus, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester led the way on today’s attendance tracker and followed a familiar theme, as three of the four hosted Education Day promotions.
The Mud Hens topped all teams in attendance, recording their second straight sellout on their second straight Education Day promotion, as 10,500 students, teachers and parents packed Fifth Third Field. Early start times and a fleet of school buses can make school day promotions a grind for players and game day staff, but the pay off can be seen in the numbers.
Columbus drew a 10,100 with promotions geared toward the younger crowd—no, it wasn’t a Millennial promotion—including Thirsty Thursday and discounts for fans with College IDs, plus an appearance by Jake The Diamond Dog.
In non-Education Day news, the Iowa Cubs drew 6,564 for Bark in the Park . . .
. . . The Fort Wayne TinCaps drew 6,449 during a meet-and-greet with Indianapolis Colts players and cheerleaders, which included a skills competition of sorts for the little ones . . .
. . . And the Tulsa Drillers attracted 5,578 for the Corey Seager bobblehead giveaway.
